I am proud to be the Team Leader of Translation e-space, and I would like to introduce our new addition to the team, Francesca Botto. Welcome on board, Francesca!

Mi chiamo Francesca Botto e sono una traduttrice. Non “faccio” la traduttrice, perché per me questo è molto più di un lavoro: è il mio primo passatempo, la mia passione, il mio modo di rilassarmi.

So che tanti colleghi condividono i miei sentimenti, mentre ad alcuni questo attaccamento alla professione potrà sembrare esagerato. Ho un’unica scusa per giustificare questa dedizione al lavoro: più ci penso, più sono convinta che l’amore per le parole e la scrittura siano la mia unica e sola virtù. Non ho fatto altro che studiare lingue per tutta la mia vita e sono la persona più monotematica che conosca. La mia insegnante di ginnastica ritmica distoglieva lo sguardo con aria imbarazzata (“miracoli non ne facciamo”), ma a 4 anni leggevo le targhe delle macchine straniere; ho dovuto prendere ripetizioni di chimica, ma ho iniziato a studiare tedesco da sola a 15 anni; i vari insegnanti di chitarra, pianoforte, pallavolo hanno dovuto dare forfait, e con loro mia mamma, nel vano tentativo di insegnarmi a cucinare e a lavorare a maglia. Le attività manuali sono il mio tallone d’Achille, ma le mie dita volano sulla tastiera… Ecco perché l’anno scorso ho iniziato a studiare croato per interesse personale: è l’unica cosa che mi dà soddisfazione!

My dream of becoming a translator began in 2000, when I chose to study Translation at University. It took me a good 5 years, which included a diploma in translation and interpreting, a degree in linguistic mediation and 18 months of a dull job as a PA in Genoa, before I landed myself on a Master’s course in Translation in Turin, which changed my life. For the few previous years I had been translating on and off, but only this course opened the way to translation as a profession. I met some incredible people, both fellow students and teachers, who gave me huge motivation by showing me that it really was possible to make a living out of a passion. This wasn’t without sacrifice: my personal life suffered from my engrossment in work and I probably lost touch with reality for a while. I would work tirelessly, even late at night, and care about little else.

In 2006 I moved to England and my dream became complete: now translation is my only source of income and I am building a new life in a foreign country, which is an incredible way of experiencing my passion every day.

I have met some great people and all this contributes to making me really happy. I am proud of the way I work, and over the years I have established many rewarding and strong relationships with my clients.
